For those of you following the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, by the end of today, the prestigious “Final Four” will be known. Even if you don’t follow men’s basketball, stay with me because I’m making a point.
Out of these four teams, one will eventually win the championship. The other 3 – along with the 61 additional teams that began the quest for the championship – will end their season on a loss. There can be only one winner.
I liken this to someone’s search for a new home. They may start with an internet search. They’ll likely scan the newspaper ads and home guide magazines. They may do drive-by or other types of research as well, such as asking friends or co-workers about their experiences with various builders or neighborhoods.
Then they’ll formulate a starting list of places to look at. Of all the possibilities for their new home – dozens or even hundreds – this beginning list already is a type of short list, but there’ll be more competition, scrutiny, and elimination until the final one is selected.
Along the way, there indeed be a “Final Four” or “Terrific Three” or “Toss-up Two” before their short list is refined and only one home or builder remains. There can be only one winner.
