You Can’t Go Back

Remember the movie “Field of Dreams”? The premise was that people wanted to return to a time of their life that they felt was full of fond memories and less responsibilities – and they’d even pay for it.

We have another word for it: “nostalgia.”

There’s “oldies” music, diners, and other reminders of an earlier time. The retail stores in Cracker Barrel restaurants feature music, toys, candy, and other items from the past. The walls of their restaurants, and those of TGI Friday’s and Applebee’s, are adorned with old advertising signs, tools, household items, and toys.

We even create NTD communities with front porch orientations, alleyways, and rear access garages to remind us of neighborhoods that we lived in during earlier years.

Visiting the past – even feeling good about the past – can be good. It can be soothing, pleasant, and refreshing. Maybe you’ve moved away from where you grew up, and long to return.

However, we really can’t go back and try to live in an earlier time. It just doesn’t work. I’ve seen people try. Somehow the memories of what used to be just don’t square with the current day. People change, buildings change, ideas change. It’s just different.

If you long for a simpler, earlier time – the “good old days” – relive them in your mind or take a vacation to someplace that provides that.

Years from now, today will be the “good old days.” Enjoy them while you have them and make the most of every single one. Let’s not look back but forward.
