A Lesson in Commitment from the Signers of the Declaration of Independence

We talk a lot about commitment and being committed to a plan or project or goal or activity.

For many of us, commitment is just another way of expressing our dedication to seeing something accomplished. It embodies the qualities of courage, persistence, perseverance, and integrity.

To me one of the finest examples of commitment comes from the 56 men who met in Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776 and were the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Not only did they have the wisdom and foresight to see that things needed to be changed, they had the courage to stand up and lay it all on the line.

These were not people who had nothing better to do than serve a few weeks in Congress. These were some of the most affluent, important, and influential men of their day. They had plenty to lose by declaring independence – including their lives.

The closing line in the Declaration of Independence declares and affirms their commitment to each other and to the cause they were promoting:

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Notice than in addition to risking all they had in this effort that they were enlisting and relying upon the support of God and of each other to help their pact become a reality.

Now, that’s commitment!
