Yesterday, someone dropped (or threw – I wasn’t watching so I can tell which it was) 2 Yellow Book directories, each in a yellow plastic bag, over my fence and into the yard.
I didn’t request them, and I don’t know why I got them except I guess everyone does. I know I wouldn’t have paid for them.
My dog loves to shred plastic bags – and their contents – whether it’s a UPS delivery, FedEx, USPS, newspaper, or anything else. So why should this be any different? Soon I had one partially destroyed yellow bag with the book separated from it and another yellow bag completely shredded with pages of the book littering my yard. Both total losses – but they were headed for the recycling bin even if the dog hadn’t interceded.
Yellow Page advertising – whether Yellow Book or the traditional Yellow Pages – is passé. I don’t remember the last time I advised one of my clients to advertise in the Yellow Pages (except online) and it’s been even longer since I actually used one.
The traditional Yellow Pages does have a hook, however, in that you have to advertise in the printed book to be online. Too bad.
It’s unfortunate for anyone selling Yellow Page advertising, the merchant who is being hounded to advertise, and for the company printing the books.
I think Yellow Page advertising has gone the way of the VHS and the cassette tape. They had their purpose but that has passed.
So aside from the fact that the books I received were destroyed and littered my yard, plastic bags were needlessly used to distribute the bags, paper was used to print these dinosaurs – although paper is a renewable resource, and the books themselves really are of questionable value because they take up space, are out-of-date as soon as they are printed, weren’t specifically requested or appreciated, are never handy if you do need them, and cannot be read without a magnifying glass.
That probably was never the intent in printing and distributing these books, but there’s definitely nothing green about them – unless you count the paper recycling.
Next time save the paper and don’t bother printing mine.
