We Make Our Own Breaks

The President and the Congress have been talking about creating jobs, but that's not what is needed. We don't need more government jobs, and they can't create private sector jobs. It's that simple.

However, they can make it easier for us to thrive by withdrawing and removing some of the many restrictions and taxes on small businesses. They can make access to money easier. That would be enough, and we could take it from there.

We make our own breaks as entrepreneurs, independent salespeople, real estate salespeople, and small businesses. We don't look to the government for help, and we don't want any except a more favorable business climate.

It's great being in business.

The Joy Of Being In Business

I was reflecting today on the joy of being in business and the freedom we have to make our own decisions about the direction of our businesses. We get to set our own goals and then work toward achieving them. Somewhere along the way, we take stock of where we are in the pursuit and accomplishment of those goals and we may adjust our journey.

We may tweak our business model. We may decide on a different marketing strategy. We might change our pricing structure or our product offerings. We might decide to appeal to a different customer base.

All the while, these are our choices, our decisions. We have the freedom to do this. That is empowering, and it is so exciting.

Set The Example

Leadership, business ethics, setting the example, and role modeling are important concepts for influencing those around us and maintaining a healthy self-image.

We need to set a good example in the workplace, in interpersonal relationships, at home, in the marketplace, and at play. It is a responsibility worth undertaking to protect our brand and to positively impact those around us.

We never know who may be watching and copying us.

Thursday's Thought - "Change"

Thursday's Thought: Change. Change comes for all of us. It is a constant.  Sometimes we see it coming like the changing color of the leaves in the fall. Other times it is more subtle and less noticeable. We need to be ready for change and keep adapting.

Spending Freeze Or Brain Freeze

The spending freeze that the President just announced is getting a lot of positive response, but it is a trick.

Don't let it freeze your brain - you know the way you get a sharp headache when you eat ice cream or a snow cone on a hot day.

Only if you have a brain freeze will you not see through this despicable ploy. First, the budgets were run up last year - double digits. Then many (but not all) were frozen. Careful. This does not mean that there is no increase. It means that they remain at the the 22 or 35 or whatever percent they increased over 2008 in 2009. Freeze. Not hardly.

Second, the freeze cannot be limited, and spending can't be cut for three years.

The President has found a way to make an end run around the Congress and the Constitution. We just fumbled.

State Of Our Business

Each year the President makes a report to Congress on the "State of the Union." Actually this is provided for in Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution.

Governors give an annual "State of the State" message, and mayors deliver their "State of the City."

In keeping with that, we should analyze and evaluate our business with a "State of our Business" exercise. That is what I proposed in my podcast message today, "STATE OF OUR BUSINESS."

We should evaluate the status of our business in terms of personnel, equipment, products, services, performance, marketing, and sales to determine how well we are doing and what adjustments might be needed.

In short, where are we are in relation to where we want to be and what it will take to get there? Where have we come from and where are we going?

A Little Planning Can Be Very Effective

Preparation is always good. However, always preparing and never doing is not good.

Nevertheless, sufficient preparation is important to be successful. It helps us think something through before we embark on it - anticipating issues that may need to be adjusted, tweaked or eliminated from the final plan.

Preparation lets us practice our presentation or our message ahead of time to see if it does what we want it to do and to make sure their are no gaps in what we want to say or convey.

Preparation is what the true professionals use to separate themselves from their competitors.

Selling To Salespeople

As someone involved in sales, don't you just really enjoy being sold something by someone who knows what they are doing?  They say that salespeople are the easiest ones to sell. I'm not sure if that's because we get so involved in the other person's techniques that we just play along and buy or if we really want the other person to succeed because we know what it's like to make a sale.

My new book came out a week ago, and I sold several copies at the IBS. In one such encounter of discussing my book with a friend, I asked him a series of closing questions, and he served up the requisite objections. We both had a good laugh as we enjoyed the role play - observing how the other was responding to the information being shared.

I think we like working with salespeople who know what they are doing, and even though we know what's coming next in the closing sequence, we just go along. It's actually pleasant buying from someone who is confident and enthusiastic in what they are selling. Hopefully we won't buy anything that we don't need or can't use as a result.

Home

After spending all of last week at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas, it was great to return home. This got me thinking that the home is such a great place for all of us to return to - whether it's just been a day away at the office or a week out-of-town.

Homes give us comfort and peace. They are our retreat. In addition to actual real estate sales, many of the other sales that are made in this country and elsewhere involve products, accessories, or services for the home or for use in the home.

In my podcast message today, "HOME," I reflect on the importance of the home to all of us in sales.

Small Business had A Good Week

As small businesspeople, we have been taking it on the chin as our government has been trying to pass cap and trade, health care, and many other major regulation or spending bills.

It was starting to look a little dire, until Tuesday.

You'll recall that's the day Scott Brown - in the midst of overwhelming odds and precedence and an all-out campaign lead by the President - won the US Senate seat in Massachusetts and shattered that insurmountable 60 vote block of Democratic votes in the Senate.

Then, Southers - who wanted to unionize the TSA workers - withdrew his application to be confirmed as TSA Director.

As a result of Brown's election, the Health Care bill as we have known it seems unpassable. I would think that cap and trade is not going anywhere either.

Let's build upon this week and keep going.

Thursday's Thought - "Pathways"

Interruptions

We all face events that interrupt or distract us - phone calls, people dropping by our office, accidents, emergencies, and other unplanned occurrences - and I discuss them. In my podcast message today called "INTERRUPTIONS."

When these events happen - as they surely will - we have two ways of working with them. We can lash out and react with negative emotion, or we can accept them and work through them with a positive response.

They don’t have to ruin anything that we are working on, and we don’t need to be defeated by them.

On Friendships

Today was the first real day of IBS although I have been here in Las Vegas since Sunday.

As I mentioned before, one of the real values of the pre-show meetings is the friendships. Some people that we have known and interacted with for years, from all over the country, we only get to see a few times a year. This is one of those times.

Some people we are just meeting at this event. Next time them will move into the associates column and we'll meet additional people to add to our friendships and network.

If nothing more than staying connected with friends, acquaintances, and colleagues who share a common business interest, the IBS is a success in my book.

Tomorrow we begin two days of the "Meet The Experts" programs. These are more chances to renew friendships and create new ones as well as share some great information with those in attendance.

Mattress Shopping

Ever consider how shopping for a mattress an new home could be similar? Probably not - but there are similarities.

In my podcast message today, "MATTRESS SHOPPING," I comparing the process of shopping for a mattress with the process of looking for a home. Both rely heavily on advertising and promotion, but the message doesn't connect until there is a perceived need.

Day-in-and-day-out mattress retailers and home builders use billboards, signage, advertising, and other forms of marketing to keep their message fresh and in front of anyone who might have a need. In both cases, it goes largely unnoticed until that need is there, and then the message is appreciated.

Home building can learn from mattresses.

Thursday's (Or Friday's) Thought - "Reverb"

Thursday's (Or Friday's) Thought: Reverb. Looking at these clouds and the waves they look like reminds us that what we say or publish in-person, online, or in our blogs can reach far from the person we originally created the message for and can impact many others. This is great.

Mornings

Mornings are great motivators for all of us - even those times when we don't feel like facing another day. They bring opportunities and hope. Each one is new. We never know what they will bring - except opportunity.

No matter how we are feeling or what challenges we may have to overcome each day, mornings signify opportunity and a new beginning. New people are put into our lives each day as well.

In my podcast message today, "MORNINGS," I reflect on the beauty of mornings.

IBS Is Just A Few Days Away

It's hard to believe that the International Builders Show (IBS) is just a few days away. It comes around once a year, but it wasn't that long since the last one.

This is a great time to see colleagues and friends that we may only see just that once each year. It's also a time to share in a great exchange of information and service to the industry.

I'll be participating in a few programs - I always look forward to that.

Anyone attending the Show, please reach out to me. Would love to connect with you there.

Drop by the "NSMC/IRM Meet the Experts" anytime on Wednesday or Thursday. That is a sure way to find me.

Sorry Isn't Enough

Yesterday, Mark McGwire admitted to the world that he used steroids to break the major league baseball single season home run record - big news, we already knew this.

After refusing to testify before Congress and publicly denying it until now - even though we knew it was all a facade - why the mea culpa now? It seems he want to be the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Let me get this straight. A guy who cheated his way through baseball and made massive salaries because of his supposed prowess as well as untold millions in endorsements and product sales, now wants to start over and make even more money from a team and a sport he dishonored and disgraced?

He wants to teach guys how to hit? What's rule number one - substance abuse?

Saying "I'm sorry" doesn't cut it here - if just for the reason that he's really not sorry.

Take this same story and put it another industry and see how far it goes.

Pace Yourself

As we rush off into 2010, we want to make sure that this a controlled dash and that we pace ourselves. We need to be careful not to let our enthusiasm overtake us to the point of trying to take on too many tasks too quickly. We shouldn’t dawdle, but haste and recklessness aren’t the answer either. If we run out of steam along the way, we won’t be able to accomplish our goals this year.

We need to be consistent performers. Part of that comes through pacing ourselves to avoid moments of too much activity and those of inactivity. Running our own race is another way of describing it - so that we aren't tempted to match the race of someone else.

In my podcast message today, "PACE YOURSELF," I discuss these concepts to motivate us for the race this year.

The Importance Of Having A Backup Plan

Having a backup plan or a "Plan B" - as it is often called - is important if we are going to be effective.

Quite simply, things don't always work out the way we planned or anticipated.

A particular office supply that we needed is out of stock when we attempt to buy it, the computer repair technician can't make it today, on the way to an appointment we get caught in a major traffic delay, an outdoor activity is rained out, many more or considerably less people showed up for an event than we had planned, and other such examples have happened to us.

That's why we need a backup plan, a Plan B, a contingency plan - an idea of what we will do when we can't do what we need to do or what we planned on doing. Sometimes it just involves us. Other times, it could involve many other people.

The time to think about what would be a good substitute is before we have to - when we can clearly think of an appropriate alternative rather than in the heat of the moment when we might only be able to react.

Fresh Ideas

To have a good and prosperous 2010, we need to come up with new and better ways of running our business than we had in 2009 - even if last year was a good one for us. It doesn’t really matter how good 2009 was, we just need to make 2010 even better. The way to do that is to approach it fresh ideas and concepts.

Freshness is a great paradigm. This is one reason why springtime is so enjoyed by people - it brings new life, freshness, and renewed purpose.

In my podcast message today, "FRESH IDEAS," I invite us all to start 2010 with a fresh perspective.

Forget About That New Year's Resolution

Forget about that New Year's resolution. Maybe you never had one. That's great. Maybe you had one and it's already toast. Either way, forget about them.

We don't need resolutions. We need commitments and action. I resolve to make more sales - how? I resolve to become more fit - how? I resolve, I resolve ...

How about this? I commit to making 5 more phone calls per week to people I have never contacted previously. I commit to sending out thank you notes. after every appointment I commit to reading a book a month.

Commitments can be broken as well, but now at least you have something measurable to which you can be accountable.

Finding Your Focus

As we begin, we have many directions we can go. It's almost like we have been waiting for the calendar to change so we could tear off into the new year. Not so fast. We need to have a purpose and focus - to direct our efforts to those areas and customers where we will be the most effective and profitable.

In my podcast message today, "FINDING YOUR FOCUS," I discuss making those decisions for the year ahead. We need to take a look at our geographic market area, marketing strategies, product or service, and customer base for ways to narrow our focus to be more productive and efficient.

Then, we can pursue it at full speed.

Necessity Brings Out Hidden Talents

There's an old expression that necessity is the mother of invention. What this means is that many times we are called upon do something that we really aren't ready to do, but there is no one else to help us. So, we do what we have to. We improvise, and learn how to accomplish what we didn't think we could. Either we knew it all along - but never gave ourselves credit for being able to do it, or we figured it out well enough to get it done. Either way, the job got done and we felt better about ourselves and our abilities as a result.

Learn How To Generate Your Own Leads

Successful lead generation is a topic that is found on many salespeople's New Year's resolutions. It also happens to be the name of a 6-hour course I am offering this Friday, January 8th in Boynton Beach at the Gold Coast Builders Association.

The course is $89, but early registration of $74 continues through tomorrow, January 4th. Call Katie at (561) 732-5959 x 102 to register.

I will be focusing on intentional lead generation but covering the production of leads from many perspectives.

This is open to anyone is sales or marketing - regardless of your product or service.

New Year's Gift

We have tremendous opportunities awaiting us in 2010, All of us have the same number of days, and all of us will have many chances to be successful. There will be some challenges and detours along the way, but we have many chances to pave the way for our success.

In my podcast message today, "NEW YEAR'S GIFT," I suggested that we all have a huge box of opportunities sitting in front of us that we just need to unwrap and start enjoying. Some are going to be better than others and some will bring unforeseen challenges. Still, we have a tremendous chance to do well this year.

Happy New Year. Enjoy living your gift.

Blank Slate

Welcome to 2010. Happy New Year!

In front of each of us is a blank slate onto which we can write whatver we want in the new year.

More sales, more appointments, stronger leads. Those are all possible. We just have to execute now.

I think of 2010 as a huge present we have been given. As we unwrap it, we'll see all sorts of possibilities and fun things to do in 2010. By the way, there are no returns so let's use our present to its fullest.
