Whenever we are in the midst of a rain or snow storm - one in which we can barely see anything but the rain or snow - it is hard to imagine that the sun will ever shine again. We encounter other dark spots in life as well. But we have the courage to know that these events are only temporary.
Often, it looks bleak at the time, but we get through them and the sun returns. When we know that no matter how dark something may look at the time that it will pass, we can deal with it.
In my podcast message today, "After The Storm," I talk about getting through the storms in life with the knowledge that they will pass.

Our Expectations Are Important
When we enter a contest of any kind - sales, shopping, sports, trivia, or literally anything - we start with certain expectations. Based on our ability, our preparation, how much we know about the contest, our physical or mental ability, and our attitude, we predetermine how well we think we might do. That goes a long way toward determining the final outcome, but it is not the only factor.
Still our expectations can guide and govern our behavior, our effort, and our commitment to an endeavor.
Stated another way, our mental attitude figures prominently into our performance.

Didn't See It Coming
Market and economic conditions can change - as many of us have experienced over the past few years. Depending on our product or service and the depth of our market, things are very different today than a couple of years ago.
It's our responsibility to respond to those changes - even to anticipate them - in order to survive and thrive. In my podcast message today, "Didn't See It Coming," I cite specific examples of how companies have had issues dealing with change, such as Kodak, Railway Express, and Blockbuster.
Change is inevitable. It's how we are prepared to address it and work with it that will determine our success. We have to look ahead, think ahead, plan ahead, and deal with the present to be successful.

Don't Wait On It
The momentum that we gained during the summer – particularly during the “Summer Selling Season” – needs to propel us into the fall.
In my podcast message today, "Don't Wait On It," I offer a complementary message to my previous one about getting it done now.
We must go after what we want – we can’t rely on it just coming to us. We have to seize control.
We can't wait for things to come to us – phone calls, walk-ins, emails, business in general. We must go out and actively seek the business that we want. We must meet people, develop those contacts and sales leads, pursue them, and make things happen on our own.

The Sales Laboratory
The last Saturday in September means that every college football team in the nation will be playing - or has played within a few days of this date. College football is a classic struggle of mental attitude, physical power, preparation, execution, stamina, will to prevail, conditioning, momentum, and opportunities between the two teams in each contest.
I liken it to a sales laboratory because we find many of the same elements that occur in a sales encounter between ourselves and our customers or sales leads.
It's making adjustments, counterattacking, shifting, using our fundamentals, and determining just how much we want to succeed.

Don't Put It Off
We just finished the summer with its "Summer Selling Season" that helped us to focus on our business during the hottest time of the year to be able to generate leads and make sales. Now that we have said goodbye to summer, we are moving into fall.
The opportunities and the challenges for being successful are still here in the falltime, so we need to be diligent. It's easy to put things off because the weather is so nice, but that doesn't help get it done.
We need to keep up the momentum that we gained during the summer and to remain committed to pursuing our year-end sales goals. The year is winding down, and we need to act now.
In my podcast message today, "Don't Put It Off," I challenge all of us to do the important things now and not to delay them.

Welcome To Fall
Today is the last official day of summer. Tomorrow is the first full day of fall although unofficially it began on Labor Day. Summer was great, but fall has so many opportunities and fun activities for us - plus the changing leaves and temperatures. Let's enjoy the transition and the new season.
In my podcast message today, "Welcome To Fall," I prepare us for the exciting days of fall that lie ahead.
Let's have a great time enjoying the cooler weather but remember to keep selling.

Finished!
Isn't it a great feeling to accomplish something and be done with it? It might be writing a proposal, writing or reading a book, taking a long trip, completing a major project, undertaking some improvements around the home or office, or deciding on a car or computer to purchase.
Whatever it is, there is a sense or relief, release, and accomplishment when it is finished. Until then, much of our mental and physical energy is poured into that project. It's nice to be able to get on to something else in our lives. Something else to complete and then feel good about.

Working Towards A Goal
We all have - or should have goals. Some are written down, some aren't. Some are long-term. Some are more immediate.
Regardless, we have various approaches for accomplishing and working toward a goal. We can begin to immediately attack them in a very aggressive manner, methodically work through them, wait until the last minute, or work them in fits and starts. Part of the successful response is what works for each person, but there are ones that are more stressful than others.
In my podcast message today, "Working Towards A Goal," I discuss a few of the styles or approaches for accomplishing our goals. The important thing is to have a style and to actually work toward the goal.

Constitution Day
In my podcast message today, "Constitution Day," I commemorate the observance of the drafting and completion of our Constitution by the Continental Congress on September 17, 1787.
Of course, our Constitution provides a number of freedoms and rights for us and even gives us rights not specifically included elsewhere through the 9th Amendment. The powers of Congress are enumerated and specifically limited. This is a great governing document.
Our Constitution is the "Law of the Land" and really needs no interpretation or legislating from the bench. It is very clear on what it covers and prohibits.

Friday's Thought - "Constitution Day"
Friday's Thought: Constitution Day. Today we commemorate the drafting of our Constitution on September 17, 1787. Our Constitution provides both liberties for us and restraints on the government. It allows us to own property, run a business, say and associate with whom and what we want, and many other freedoms.

Out Of Timeouts
In football and basketball, teams get to use timeouts to stop the clock, suspend the action, and regroup for a special play that can put points on the board for them. We don't get timeouts in sales so we have to be ready all the time.
Unlike football where a strategically called timeout late in the game can actually give a team a chance to win, we have no such ability in sales. We have to be ready to think on our feet and deal with any situation we are facing. We can't call a timeout and collect our thoughts or check with someone else. We can't stop the clock and resume later.
In my podcast message today, "Out Of Timeouts," I make the case for better ready to play to the finish because we can't stop the clock or suspend the action.

Tea Party Means Business
Many people dismiss the Tea Party as being a fringe organization or as not having a specific slate of candidates. They don't take it seriously.
Those are mistakes. The Tea Party, as evidenced by yesterday's victories of Christine O'Donnell and Carl Paladino, has a voice.
Rather than an organized machine like the 2 principal political parties, the Tea Party stands for traditional small government, low responsible spending, and strict adherence to the Constitution. It is not a Democrat or Republican thing. It is an American thing.
All of the naysayers, including the White House, can watch in another 48 days as people toss out sitting members of Commerce and elect ones more responsive to the needs and will of the people.

Knee-Jerk Isn't Leadership
How often do we see government and big business react to a situation rather than respond to it? Their first inclination is knee-jerk - an impulsive, over-reaching, emotional action.
The opposite of reacting is to respond - a planned, calculated, intelligent act. The knee-jerk reaction to the Gulf oil spill was to ban drilling, for the the recent gas explosion to inspect every inch of pipeline across the country, and for liquids on airplanes to ban them or make them an inconvenience to use and carry.
There is nothing wrong with having a response - that's leadership. Anyone can react. Babies react.
Reacting fails to take into account the bigger picture or the impact of the action. A response is planned, unemotional, intelligent, calculated behavior.
In my podcast message today, "Knee-Jerk Isn't Leadership," I make this distinction.

Save Your Money
While I respect their entrepreneurial spirit in offering leads for sale, there is no reason anyone should ever buy leads from anyone else. As a salesperson or business owner, it is solely our responsibility to generate our clientele, customer base, and sales leads. This is not something that can be delegated or acquired - unless we hire it done under our own supervision in an employer-employee/contractor capacity.
There are many ways we can generate sales leads - including advertising, social media, internet, website, WOM, referrals, and direct contact. The fact remains that we initiate the process - however we do it - then we accept the results and manage the customer experience. If we are not happy with the quality or quantity of the traffic we are getting, we get more aggressive or creative. We don't pay a service to provide leads.
Who knows more our business, our products or services, our reputation, our financial requirements, and our typical customer than we do? Why would we expect an outside service to even come close?
We need to stop looking for the shortcut - there isn't one. It takes work, and that's how we succeed.

Achieving An Upset
Now that football is really underway - colleges played a full schedule yesterday, and the NFL kicked off today - the talk of upsets is part of everyday conversation.
What is an upset? I talk about it in my podcast message today, "Achieving An Upset." I also relate this to sales.
Sometimes teams that are expected to win sometimes don't, and how teams that seemingly don't match up with stronger teams sometimes do prevail. Part of it is attitude. Part is momentum. Part is performance and execution. In sales the same hold true.
There are two ways that upsets can occur - when top teams underperform and when weaker teams have an unusually gifted performance. Mental attitude and preparation have a lot to do with also. Then, this message is translated into a sales effort so that we understand that we don't have an option as far as our performance is concerned. it has to be first-rate at all times.

What Goes Around
Sometimes things just happen - especially with computers and electronics. Unplug them, reboot, wait, repeat. Then call someone.
Over the past 2 days, I've been trying to solve a computer issue that in the end resolved itself - after much time, fuss, and frustration. It's interesting that two different technicians from two different companies approached the issue relatively the same and both came up empty. Then, I reversed everything that had been tried, and the situation was eliminates - happily and fortunately.
This post is humorous - for the final result, not necessarily in the process. After much messing and consumption of time and energy, fortunately everything was resolved - that's the amusing part . In fact, nothing needed to be done at all - apparently.
In my podcast message today, "What Goes Around," I chronicle the events and the humor.

"The Fall Campaigh"
Labor Day this past Monday began a new selling opportunity for us - "The Fall Campaign."
As we continue to build on the great sales success we enjoyed over the past 2 months during the "Summer Selling Season," we can use our momentum to carry us far into the fall.
As we continue to build on the great sales success we enjoyed over the past 2 months during the "Summer Selling Season," we can use our momentum to carry us far into the fall.
From now until Halloween, there are roughly 2 months. There are more distractions than we had to deal with in the summertime. but this is still a fantastic time to build our businesses. Between Halloween and Thanksgiving is the second part of "The Fall Campaign" but with more distractions.
Let's take full advantage of it.
In my podcast message today, "The Fall Campaign," I promote the tremendous opportunity that we have for sales.

Make Sure The Website Is Live
The last couple of days, I've received 2 emails from major companies - and when I clicked the link in their offer, their website was down. One was under repair, the other was unavailable.
It only takes a minute to check to make sure the website is functioning and that the links work.
If maintenance on the site is scheduled, then adjust the release of the emails accordingly.
Nothing worse than an email touting a new product or service that takes you nowhere.

Happy Free Enterprise Day
Today is Labor Day - more correctly Labor Union Day. Therefore, I take this opportunity to say "Happy Free Enterprise Day" and to celebrate the contributions of entrepreneurs, inventors, risk takers, and free enterprisers in helping to make and sustain this country.
American labor is great - or at least it used to be. Inventive, productive, problem-solvers, up to any challenge. As unions have asked for and received higher and higher wages and benefits, our businesses have become less competitive in the world. GM - once the largest manufacturer in the world - is now owned by the government after becoming insolvent.
It is up to us, rather, as free enterprisers to carry the load of innovation and job formation.
In my podcast message today, "Happy Free Enterprise Day," I offer my alternate celebration for today's holiday.

The End
Today starts the Labor Day weekend - the unofficial end of summer and the end of the "Summer Selling Season." This is the last fling at summertime activities before shifting our focus to the fall. Boating, swimming, and barbeques will give way to football, campfires, cooler temps, and changing leaves.
Now it's time to shift gears into the fall but not to lose the momentum that the "Summer Selling Season" provided.
In my podcast message today, "The End," I observe this transition and challenge all of us to get going and make the fall just as great as the summer. There are more distractions competing for our customer's attention, but we'll just have to rise to the occasion.

Friday''s Thought - "Force"
Friday's Thought: Force. Behind every action there is a force that impacts it, causes it, directs it, or influences it. We can be that force or we can let others do it.

Are We Mindreaders?
In my podcast message today, "Are We Mindreaders?" I discuss the frustration we feel when we try to find something in a store that is not where we think it logically should be. We have to try to guess where it is, locate it by accident, or ask someone how to find it.
Thus, there is a need for us to keep things simple for our customers to find and not hide them or move to an unfamiliar area. We don't like hunting for items in the market or hardware store that aren't where we think they should be.
Our customers shouldn't have to interpret or guess where we put things either. We need to make information simple and intuitive to find.

On To Fall
With the calendar turning the page to September, we also are preparing for fall. The summertime activities are winding down. In fact, this weekend signals the unofficial end of summer.
September is a transitional month. School is back in session. Football starts. Cooler weather is on its way.
Nevertheless, sales don't take a holiday, and now that we won't be so tempted to partake in summertime activities we actually should be more focused on selling.
