Ready, Set, Go

New Year's Eve is here. 2010 is essentially over Let's get ready to get started on 2011, and let's prepare to make it a very good year.

Everything about 2010 is done - we can't change it. Good or bad, it's done. Now all we can do is focus on 2011 and vow to make it the best year that we can. We'll take our momentum with us to propel us into 2011 and start strong.

In my podcast message "Ready, Set, Go," I discuss putting 2010 behind us and jumping right into 2011.

Counting Down

With only a few hours left until we ring in 2011, there isn't much more we can do in 2010. If there is something that we can check off our "to-do" list, we need to get right on it. Otherwise. it'll be ready for us in 2011 in a couple of days.

Are we ready for new opportunities and a fresh start? I hope so, because that's what's coming in just a few more hours.

Let's make 2011 a great year!

Won't Be Long Now

2010 is all but over so we need to concentrate on beginning 2011 in a meaningful way and make it a great year

As we near the start of the new year, there isn’t much more we can do in 2010 so we need to start looking forward to 2011. We may have something we’d like to finish in 2010, but essentially we need to get ready for the new year and the many opportunities that are going to await us.

Everything about 2010 is done - we can't change it. Good or bad, it's done. Now all we can do is focus on 2011 and vow to make it the best year that we can. We'll take our momentum with us to propel us into 2011 and start strong.

Be Specific

Identify the one thing that you like to do in the remaining 3 days of 2010 or the the first thing you want to do in 2011 - be specific. This is not the time to be general. Focus is required. There is an answer - find it.

Almost There

We are in the closing days of 2010 and the start of 2011 is right ahead of us. Almost there applies to both the end of the this year and the beginning of a brand new opportunity.

We are winding down the days in 2010 and literally counting the hours that remain. As we wrap up activities remaining to be done in 2010, we keep a watchful eye on the start of 2011. In either case, we're almost there. Midnight, December 31st is close. We're almost there.

In my podcast message today, "Almost There," I note that we are on the threshold of a new year - even if we are ready for it to be here.

The Final Days

Now just 5 days separate us from the start of 2011. Not much time to complete business that remains to be done in 2010 - but enough time if we focus.

This is the perfect time to make plans for 2011 and to set appointments for the first couple of weeks of January.

2010 will soon be a memory. We need to look ahead to next week and next year - which are actually the same thing.

Did Santa Come?

With 2011 upon us, we need more than ever to be self-reliant and do for ourselves, our businesses, our customers, and our families without the need or even the request for government assistance or interference. We don't need a Santa Claus in any form - unless it is an investor or a large customer.

On this Christmas Day, we need to work toward not having a Santa Claus mentality where we look to have things given to us or done for us. We are responsible, resolute, resourceful, courageous, and adventuresome. We can get it done for ourselves and our families. We don't require handouts, bailouts, and government assistance. We need to adopt the free enterprise spirit of making our own way and rejoicing in the abilities with which we have been endowed.

In my podcast message today, "Did Santa Come?" I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and  try to get us focused on a can-do spirit.

A Very Quiet Day

Today, as everyone gets ready for Christmas, it is one of the quietest days of the year for business. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, most offices are closed either all day or at noon today. Retailers are open, but services and other businesses are closed. School is out. It is just a quiet day - except for those crowded into the malls and stores getting that last minute item or shopping for food.

Tomorrow is supposed to be quiet - it is a special holiday. Today is not an actual holiday but is observed like one nevertheless.

Merry Christmas! Enjoy your quiet day - and weekend. We'll hit it a little harder next week to close out 2010, and then we'll really jump into action on the 3rd or 4th of January.

Counting Down

Get ready to bid goodbye to 2010. Another 8 days and it will be January 1st.

Regardless of whether 2010 has been good, bad, disappointing, better than expected, or mediocre, 2011 is a brand new chapter.

We might be counting down the closing days of 2010 until the year is over - good or bad and with everything done or under the gun to finish. We might also be counting down the days until the start of 2011 and the beginning of new opportunities. Whatever 2010 has been to us, it's almost completed. We need to begin looking ahead to 2011 and what we can accomplish here.

In my podcast message today, "Counting Down," I discuss finishing 2010 although it is essentially complete and launching 2011.

Two-Minute Drill

Effort is important to success, but it isn't always enough. That extra effort, that second mile, that second effort is very often the difference maker.

It's that willingness to do more than the obvious or to go beyond what seems necessary that can mean real success.

The few remaining days in 2010 are like the final seconds of the football game where several big plays and important scoring is done because of the focus and single-mindedness of scoring that occurs then.

Here is where the intensity and concentration lie. We are down to the last little bit of time remaining and we need to make a score to finish 2010 on top.

In my podcast message today, "Two-Minute Drill," I discuss how we need to develop a drive and determination to see us through.

Tomorrow Is Very Historic

Tomorrow is a very special day - literally a once in a lifetime opportunity. Two events are occurring that have not happened together since the year 1638 in early colonial times.

First, there is a total eclipse of the moon which is scheduled here on the east coast to occur at 2:41 am (11;41 pm tonight on the west coast). Then at 6:38 pm tomorrow night is the winter solstice - the official beginning of the 3-month winter quarter.

If you think you'll skip the observance until the next one, you might want to reconsider. It won't happen again until 2094.

Second Effort

Effort is important to success, but it isn't always enough. That extra effort, that second mile, that second effort is very often the difference maker.

It's that willingness to do more than the obvious or to go beyond what seems necessary that can mean real success.

Just as the second effort is important in sports, we can relate this to our businesses by going the extra mile and not quitting when it's convenient but continuing on. This is how great results are attained.

The second effort is persevering, continuing, working through and around distractions and obstacles to achieve dramatic results that others might not complete.

In my podcast message today, "Second Effort," I discuss how we need to develop a drive and determination to see us through.

Last Saturday Of The Year

Today is the last Saturday of 2010. I know that there is still one more left, but that's Christmas and that is not a Saturday. It's a holiday.

Saturdays are for errands, odd-jobs, side trips, relaxing, yard work, catching up on paperwork, playing with the kids and grandkids, going for a walk, and so many other activities - maybe even all of these because we can pack a lot into a Saturday.

Enjoy the day. Hopefully there will be many more next year. We just never know.

It's OK To Breathe

If you're going to use telephone contact as a way to take your marketing message to your potential consumer, then be prepared and avoid the blatant sales message.

You have to learn what the customer wants and if they're even interested before you can proceed.

In my podcast message today, "It's OK To Breathe," I
relate a classic story of the wrong way to conduct a telephone sales presentation.

This personally happened to me, and the caller should have engaged me, asked some discovery questions, set out some benefits, and attempted to involve me in the discussion.

This was a hard-charging, one-sided sales presentation from the moment he answered the phone until he interrupted it 4 minutes later. The caller hadn't even taken a breath in all that time.

Let's take a lesson from this.

Free Enterprise At Work

The free market works when given a chance. Government is not the answer , but it often is the issue.

A&P grocery recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize its company and has not approached the federal government for any type of bailout money or a loan. This is strictly a free market issue.

In a very orderly fashion, A&P is seeking to discard some of its locations and streamline its operations.

This means that some of their failed locations can be purchased by Food Lion, Stop & Shop, and Safeway - to boost the market position of those companies and help A&P recover from the financial doldrums in which it found itself.

As a result, all four chains, and possibly some other, will have stronger market positions and healthier competition.

In my podcast message today, "Free Enterprise At Work," I discuss this market development and how competition is essential for market health.

Just Pick One

We have just 2 more weeks in 2010. There might be many things we should get done - or would like to get done - yet this year. Given the time constraints, that might not be feasible.

Therefore, we need to identify something – above all else – that can be accomplished that we need to do and then go all-out to get it done. Pick one task and do it.

We need to prioritize the work that we would like to get done in few remaining days of 2010 and then to pick one – and only one – project or task to complete. Even if it hasn’t been started yet, we should determine an important task that we can concentrate on and fulfill.

If we finish that one, we can start another, but this way we will have accomplished at least one important thing before year’s end rather than just trying to work hard on many things.

In my podcast message today, "Just Pick One," I talk about making the most of the remaining days of 2010 and having something to show for it on December 31st.

Overdrive

Two weeks from today is Christmas. So, this is likely the last week that we have to talk with people before their focus turns to the holiday celebrations and they begin keeping shortened office hours - if they go to the office at all. To make progress, we have to use this week strategically.

We must shift gears into overdrive to do all that we can in this upcoming week to make serious progress at completing our outstanding goals and projects for 2010 - then to begin building some momentum for 2011. We will need sales, appointments, and presentations in the early weeks of 2011, so now is the time to begin laying the foundation for that as well.

Let's go all-out this week as we operate in overdrive.

In my podcast message today, "Overdrive," I talk about making the most of the coming week and to begin building momentum for January.

No Time For A Cramp

The days of 2010 are rapidly disappearing, and many of us still have important tasks to complete in those few remaining days. This is why it's important not to push so hard that we develop a cramp and cause ourselves to lose valuable time while we are waiting to recover.

We have a relatively few number of days in which to accomplish anything important for our businesses - especially making more sales, setting appointments, or making new contacts. We need to press on as hard as we can to make the most of the time that we have remaining in this year, but we can't press so hard that we injure ourselves or become sidelined due to poor conditioning. We have to finish strong.

We must decide what needs to get done and then go all-out to get it done - but not recklessly.

In my podcast message today, "No Time For A Cramp," I talk about approaching the finish line for 2010 in a very string way and making sure that we have the proper conditioning to get us there.

Don't Listen To The CBO

The Congressional Budget office (CBO) is giving Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress and the Administration their talking points about how the Bush tax cuts and now the ones proposed by Obama can be maintained.

They cite enormous costs that these cuts represent. What a fabrication.

In the first place they are merely a continuation of lower tax rates - a policy that has proven to create jobs and stimulate the economy. Outrageous spending and speculation in the housing market lead to the recession.

At any rate, the tax "cuts" cost absolutely nothing and to profess otherwise is disingenuous. How can any money not received by the government in the first place be counted as an expense? It can't.

What Congress is trying to say through talking point language is that they are being denied the ability to spend to the tune of the continuation of the present tax rates versus what they would have if the rates returned to their pre 2001 and 2003 rates.

Lower taxes cost nothing and actually save us money two ways - the money we get to keep and the money Congress doesn't have to spend.

When Duty Calls

Today is "Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th. It's hardly a day to celebrate, but certainly one to remember.  It was 69 years ago today - on a Sunday in 1941 - when the Japanese bombed of the naval base at Pearl Harbor and World War II began for us.

Many lives were lost that day and many more in the ensuing 4 years of the War, but they young men that survived as well as those who were lost answered the call to duty to preserve our liberties and freedoms.

When duty calls for us, in business or with our family, we accept the call and do what is expected of us.

In my podcast message today, "When Duty Calls," I talk doing what we must to answer the call upon our resources and abilities to serve.

New To The Job Is No Excuse

Just because we haven't done something before or we haven't done it in a while - or maybe it's just a little beyond what we've done but within our capabilities - admitting to ourselves and others that this is our first time or that we aren't sure we can perform it is a major crutch. Either it is something we can do - regardless of our comfort level - or it isn't.

Asking for sympathy by creating a weak situation is not the way to succeed. No one wants to know that we might fail at it and won't cut us a break since it's our first time. We aren't in high school anymore.

If we really are incapable of a task we should pass on it or learn how to do it before going public with it.

Decision Time

2010 is rapidly slipping away. Any grand plans or goals that we made for this year had better be shaping up and nearing completion. Otherwise, it's "decision time" to determine what we must get done and what will have to carry-over into 2011 or remain undone.

We need to concentrate on the goals, sales, or appointments that must be completed over the next two weeks and to go all-out to get them accomplished. The year 2010 will soon be gone, and as we move into the holidays, it is harder to get people to focus on talking or meeting with us.

We really only have a couple of weeks left this year to accomplish anything on our list that we need to have to  get done. Three weeks from yesterday is Christmas. This means that this week and next week are basically what we have to get people to focus on what we are offering - even then their attention may be the holidays and family.

We must decide what needs to get done and then go all-out to get it done.

In my podcast message today, "Decision Time," I talk about setting priorities to complete the top activities that must be done in 2010 before closing out the year.

Running Out Of Saturdays

As I've talked about before on "Saturdays Are Important," we need to have Saturdays in our live for relaxation, change of focus, expanding or suspending the clock, and for relationship building. After today, there are only 3 Saturdays remaining in 2010, and one of them is Christmas Day.

Therefore, our precious Saturdays are down to just a couple this year. We'll get a new set next year, but it's time to make the most of the couple remaining this year.

Family time, church or charity work, skiing or hiking, a drive in the country, work around the house, setting special appointments, and other activities are perfect for scheduling or working into our Saturdays.

Let's use this time to great advantage for a change of pace.

Focus On The Finish

There's not much time left in 2010 for us to accomplish anything that we still have on our goals list. We have just four weeks left this year, and we really need to give top priority to the tasks that we haven't completed.

We must concentrate on finishing the year strongly. Four weeks from tomorrow is New Year's Day 2011.

If we have have completed most of our major work, we can go for even more. If not, we have to very diligent in completing what lies before us so that we can create momentum to carry us into the new year.

We need to focus on how we can do that and go all-out to make it happen.

In my podcast message today, "Focus On The Finish," I talk about finishing the year in strong fashion and building momentum for the new year.

Out Of Months

Now that December, the last month of the year, has begun, there are just 30 days remaining in 2010. Time is now of the essence for completing our goals and accomplishing any of the major objectives we have for 2010. We don't have time to put anything off until later. Now is the time, and it is passing quickly.

Whatever plans we had back in January or along the way during 2010 had better be coming to fruition as time is almost gone. We have just 30 days in which to complete our goals and make the successes this year that we had planned. We need to focus on how we can do that and go all-out to make it happen.

We need to focus our energies on accomplishing what we can in the remaining days of 2010. In my podcast message today, "Out Of Months," I talk about just that.
