Time's Up

In my podcast message today "Time's Up," I commemorate the end of the first quarter of 2011 and look ahead to to April and quarter number two.

Whatever we have completed so far is all that we can count in the first quarter. Now it's onward to the second quarter of the year.

No matter what we intended to get done or think we should have accomplished, it's too late now. Time's up. Now it's on to the second quarter. A new month, a new 13 weeks, a new 91 days. Time for renewal, fresh starts, an appreciation of spring, and action.

Spring Rain

In my podcast message today "Spring Rain" I look ahead to the end of the week when we start the second quarter and finish out the first one.

The springtime brings the necessary life-giving rain, and I equate that to the rainy times we experience in our lives as also being necessary for our growth and development. We learn to overcome the issues and appreciate the sunshine as a result.

Rain is necessary to make everything beautiful and healthy. Not only in nature but in our lives we need to experience the challenges, disappointments, and temporary setbacks like rain in order to make us stronger and more appreciative of the sunny days when things go well.

Beat The Buzzer

In my podcast message today "Beat The Buzzer" I look ahead to the end of the week when we start the second quarter and finish out the first one.

March signals the end of the quarter so we need to complete everything we want while there is still time to do it.

The year is moving quickly so we need to make sure we get in that last shot while there's still time. We don't want to lose out at the buzzer. There's plenty of year left, but no time like the present to get things done.

Discovering Our World

We need to understand and be aware of our marketplace and our clientele - regardless of what product or service we sell. We use our powers of observation to receive visual clues, and we ask questions to hear directly from people.

By observing what is going on around us, we can remain current and prepare to respond to changes in our marketplace. Asking questions and actively listening focuses on hearing what people are saying and adding meaning to that.

In fact, any of my books on the discovery process will help you - "Operation Discovery" for new home salespeople and builders, "Building The Sale" for Realtors, and "Power Of Discovery" for other types of sales.

In my podcast message today "Discovering Our World" I suggest ways to stay tuned into our word.

Hot Dogs Declared Safe

Hot dog, frankfurter, wiener, tube steak - call it what you like. The hot dog is Americana, and it has been declared safe to eat.

Just in time for Opening Day for the 2011 Major League Baseball season on March 31st, the latest study which finds hot dogs are safe to eat.

I think nearly everyone who likes hot dogs would agree that there's nothing quite like a dog at the ballpark. It's a flavor hard to produce anywhere else. It's a must have for any fan.

It turns out that pepperoni and deli meats are relatively harmless also in terms of what had been thought to be carcinogenic substances in the nitrates.

The surprising part of this study is that rotisserie chicken - especially the skin - is riskier to eat than the hot dogs and prepared meats.

This is great news for all the backyard cookouts also.

Keep Your Eyes Open

We encounter new opportunities constantly, but often we don't recognize them as such. If we actually are looking for them or know how to recognize them when we see them, we can derive great benefit. Sometimes it is just in looking for therm.

There are many opportunities that we might become aware of if we just are receptive to them and actually on the lookout for them. Some will be business, others for our personal, financial, or family interests. Maybe a chance to save money, get something at a discount, attend an event. or do something that we hadn't planned on or weren't aware of because we were open to seeing it.

In my podcast message today "Keep Your Eyes Open" I encourage us to actually start looking for opportunities that might cross our paths.

Remove The Leash

Spring is officially here, and it's time to start strong. We need to remove anything that has been holding us back and to run full speed into spring. This is the time for fresh starts and new beginnings.

We need to unleash our pent-up energy that has held us back over the wintertime - the weather, the early darkness, the holidays, the lack of flowers and leavers, or whatever it has been. We are now free with the freshness and newness of spring to create and pursue new opportunities with enthusiasm and optimism.

In my podcast message today "Remove The Leash" I charge us to embrace the spring and jump right into it..

Some Common Sense in the Senate

After taking a few weeks to get adjusted to his new role as Senator of Florida and maintaining a fairly low public profile, Marco is now ready to stand up and do what we elected him to do - speak out and make a difference.

Here he speaks - in his weekly message - about the continuing resolution nonsense. When the current one expires in 2 weeks, he will not be voting for anymore of them.

Welcome Spring

I have been celebrating spring for several weeks here in South Florida, but tomorrow spring officially arrives. With it comes optimism and new opportunities There is a freshness and sense of optimism and enthusiasm.

We bid goodbye to winter and embraces spring's arrival tomorrow. All winter we have been looking forward to spring. While we've had an occasional warm day or seen early flowers, we now can be confident that wintertime is past and look forward only to spring and nice weather. Along with that comes new opportunities, renewal, and a fresh beginning.

In my podcast message today "Welcome Spring" I charge us to embrace the spring.

Springtime In South Florida

Spring officially begins on Sunday, but it unofficially began last Sunday when we turned our clocks ahead an hour.

Here's a brief video I took this week here in South Florida to welcome us to spring and get us thinking about renewal.

When It Counts

With the start of March Madness - the Men's NCAA Basketball Tourney - we get to see a great example of how teams and individuals rise to the occasion and play beyond their known capabilities - when it counts.

This competition for the national championship of mens' college basketball illustrates the importance of playing all-out, and even above what we might think we are capable of,  when it counts. The same goes for other sports and for our sales careers. Doing our best - even more than we think we can - makes the difference when it counts.

In my podcast message today "When it Counts" I use basketball as an example for doing out best when it matters the most.

No Time To Beware

Today is the "Ides of March" - March 15th - as made famous in Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' but we have nothing to beware. Spring is here. All the signs point to it. Let's celebrate the arrival of spring.

We have had so many indicators of spring already, beginning with Punxsutawney Phil, Daytona 500, spring training for MLB, and the Big Dance selection today. It's time to at least mentally accept that spring is here.

In my podcast message today "No Time To Beware" I acknowledge that spring is here.

Celebrate Spring

Today we welcome the arrival of spring, if only unofficially. Now we just have next Sunday's official arrival to remove all doubt that spring has arrived. Everything else points to spring.

Last night, or this morning, we turned our clocks ahead an hour to observe Daylight Savings Time  until November. This marks the unofficial beginning of spring, but the official start is just next Sunday.

We have had so many indicators of spring already, beginning with Punxsutawney Phil , Daytona 500, spring training for MLB, and the Big Dance selection today. It's time to at least mentally accept that spring is here.

In my podcast message today "Celebrate Spring" I acknowledge that spring is here.

Springtime Is Here

Each year we look for little things that we can hang onto as signs that the winter is over and spring is on its way.

We've already had several this year. First, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow for the first time in many years, supposedly indicating an early spring.

Next, the Daytona 500 kicked off the NASCAR season and spring training for Major League Baseball started. Then we had Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday.

Now we have changed the time for nearly all the country. This last one is the unofficial beginning of spring. The other indicators were great, but now we know that spring is imminent. We've already turned the clock ahead in expectation.

Actually the official beginning of spring is but a week away, occurring next Sunday.

While we may be a little tired to enjoy the arrival of spring today due to one less hour of sleep, by next Sunday we all should ready for the official kickoff of spring.

Enter Sales Right Out OF High School

We have been conditioned to believe that we have to go to college, yet after having gone we wonder if all the hoopla was really worth it - not to mention the expense.

For certain career paths - engineering, accounting, science, research, teaching, fine arts, nursing - college is quite worthwhile and provides solid information to be used after college. For so many people, however, college is just a delay in getting started in life. It is a multi-year timeout.

Certainly for real estate sales, or other types of professional sales, college is not necessary. If I had to do it all over again, I'd skip college and go straight into sales.

Turns out, there is some validation for this opinion.

In a recently completed book "Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses" by sociologists Richard Arum of New York University and Josipa Roksa of the University of Virginia, they found that among 2300 students, just under half of them (45%) demonstrated any significant improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing by the end of their sophomore years. After four years of school, more than a third (36%) were still deficient in these skills.

There are many factors involved, including course offerings, major fields of study, the instructors, and the institutions. Still, college - while it may be right for many people - does not appear to be the great prerequisite for entering life that is such a part of conventional wisdom.

What's With The Surveys?

It's great that many companies want to provide the best type of customer care and that they are interested in evaluating their performance so they can improve.

Unfortunately, that often means surveys. We get surveys after every little contact. They have become routine and annoying.

By design, we are supposed to give them glowing comments even when they don't deserve them. Many people even coach us on the phone as to what to say.

The overuse of surveys has made them ineffective and just cumbersome and irritating to consumers. They primarily are just "feel good" for the companies. We don't dare say what we really felt.

In my podcast message today "What's With The Surveys?" I talk about the nuisance value that surveys have most of the time.

Spring Alert

Tomorrow will be the last Friday we'll have to drive home in the dark for a few months - unless we choose to work late or have a late evening appointment.

Saturday night we set our clocks ahead an hour. So beginning Monday we will have more daylight at the end of our workday. By next Friday it will seem like its always been this way and we will have adjusted for the lost hour of sleep.

This is just one of the many changes signaling springtime. We've already had Madri Gras and Ash Wednesday. The time changes tomorrow night, the Big Dance starts next week, and the vernal equinox is a week from Sunday.

All signs point to spring.

Hostile Territory

We have more than enough energy resources to be self-sufficient but we aren't allowed to drill or mine. Forget about trying to tap the strategic oil reserves. They wouldn't go that far and would a negligible affect on gas prices.

We should be all over every chuck of coal in this country and every drop of oil and vapor of natural gas across this country and off our shores.

We are being played by Washington. We have to demand drilling!!!!

Inflation, high unemployment, and a sluggish housing market are related to an ineffective approach to our oil and gas supply.

The Wait Wasn't Worth It

Ever get all excited about having something delivered or installed because you encountered a good salesperson who made you feel like you just couldn't live without it? That's what good salespeople do.

But what happens when you wait half the day for them to come, and then when they do come, they leave without unloading anything?

Twice in the past few days I have waited home or arranged my schedule to be available for a delivery - only to be told that what I had ordered would not fit where I wanted it or that it could not be installed without a lot of preparation on my part first.

Both times, the trucks drove away with the merchandise still on board. Fortunately I haven't paid for the job in full yet.

Painting a rosy picture during the sale is fine - we all do that. Delivering on the r=that expectation is another matter. The sale isn't complete until the job is delivered or installed.

Ax The Fax

Change is inevitable in life and in business. Today, my focus is the fax machine.

The fax machine has evolved from a "must-have" business machine to a "who needs it" now. We have learned to use the computer to send and receive documents and bypass the need for the fax.

For a long time, when we needed a signed agreement or a copy of a check or receipt, the fax machine was the vehicle to use. However, now we have outgrown the need for it as it has been replaced by the scanned document.

We can now take a document from our computer and email it by hitting "send." No paper to put in the machine, no watching to make sure it feeds correctly and doesn't get crooked or jam, and no calling to make sure they received or that they had paper in their machine.

In my podcast message today "Ax The Fax" I talk about the move away from the machine and my personal liberation.

Celebrating The Contributions Of Women

Did you know that among other things that March might be known for, that March is "National Women's History Month"?

Celebrating women and their accomplishments is a great idea - especially in the business world.

In real estate and new home sales, women are quite well represented.

In this video of an NBC "Nightly News" special report, women are taking over the work force and making an indelible mark on the way we do business in this country.

Time Change A'coming

Next week at this time - late afternoon - it will be later and still light. An hour later, except in Arizona and Hawaii.

That's right. Next Sunday is the first day of Daylight Savings Time.

We've gone all winter with sundown between 4:30-5:30 depending on where you live. Next week it will be approaching 8:00.

This is exciting.

More Signs Of Spring

This time of year, spring is on everyone's mind. Everyday we look for little signs that tell us that winter is finally over.

The next two weeks are going to settle this for us.

Next Saturday we change to Daylight Savings Time (except for Arizona and Hawaii). Tuesday is Mardi Gras, followed immediately by Ash Wednesday - signaling the start of the Easter season. Two weeks from tomorrow is the vernal equinox, ushering in the official beginning of spring.

Add in warmer weather and flowers starting to bloom.

In my podcast message today "More Signs Of Spring" we observe many reminders and milestones signally spring's arrival.

Breaking Ground

As spring inches closer day-by-day, the anticipation of it is strong. We look for any clue that we can find that the winter is over and that spring is actually coming.

We look forward to the ground breaking as flowers poke through the bare earth to add color to the landscape and generate optimism that the winter is past and new growth is ahead.

the ground breaking is our attitude as well as we open up to the possibilities of spring and the growth ahead. It's time for us to break the wintertime inactivity with a burst of appointments, presentations, and sales.

In my podcast message today "Breaking Ground" we look ahead to the spring that is coming.

Third And Long

In football, a third and long situation is usually a pass play becuase the offense has only one chance to make the yardage necessary to keep the ball and continue their scoring drive. Both teams know it. Therefore, another type of play often works.

Nevertheless, the long pass play is typical - making up all the yardage and then some. But it usually fails. Someone gets in a hurry, forgets an important assignment, drops the ball, gets ahead of themselves, or something similar.

We have completed two months of 2011 so we must not let any kind of desperation or haste creep into our decisions and the way we execute our plans. We must be careful not to make mistakes and fall short of our goals.

This is the beginning of the third month, with many more to come. Third and a long time to go until we're done.

In my podcast message today "Third And Long" we look ahead to all we still want to accomplish.

Welcome To March - Be Bold

Welcome to March. This is a fantastic month. It's beginning to feel like spring - a lot or a little depending on where you live. The time changes next week, and spring officially arrives on the 20th.

We should be bold this month and make serious progress toward our goals. Go in like a lion - and stay that way.

No Football This Year?

Don't you just love the NFL? The players are so overpaid for what they do, and yet they want more money. And the owners consistently fail - most of them - to put a consistently good product on the field - and they want more money. Maybe this upcoming lockout is the best for all.

Maybe we will start watching AFL and like it better - or MLS or lacrosse.

Football is a great professional sport, but many markets in this country live without it. I guess the rest of us can, too. As long as we get our football fix from high school and college, who needs the NFL?

Kind of looks bad for the guys who quit school early to enter the NFL draft doesn't it? They're stuck for now.

We need someone to come up with a competing, non-affiliated league that works. We have the UFL, and we've had the USFL, the XFL, and a couple of others.

With the issues that labor unions are having today and the weariness that many Americans have for union issues, this is a horrible time for the NFL to be doing this. Talk about lousy timing.

Suggestion: come to an agreement Thursday night, extend the current agreement indefinitely, or fold the League and go home.
