Kickin' Back

As the summer wears on, the need to seek relief from the heat with a break becomes important.

As July winds up, some of us have already taken a vacation or break, and the rest of us need to - even if it's only a few days - to regenerate and prepare for the fall that is coming.

This is a good time to tack a little vacation - not necessarily a week or two, maybe just a long weekend or a couple of days. We owe it to ourselves and those around us. When we take a little time for renewal, we are able to serve those around us with more energy and enthusiasm. As we get ready for August, let's make sure we are well rested.

In my podcast message today "Kickin' Back" I discuss renewal and getting away from summer's heat for just a few days.

Remembering To Water

Water is so vitally important for keeping all living things healthy and growing. This applies to us as well as the plant life.
Many of us have gardens, and they need to be watered when the rains aren't plentiful enough. Dehydration is a serious condition and we need to do our best to keep up the fluid levels during the heat of summer.

As the summer wears on, the need to seek relief from the heat with water becomes even more important.

In my podcast message today "Remembering To Water" I discuss the importance of water for maintaining our health and stamina.

Football's Back

As we look forward to the new NFL season, there is a frenzy of activity due to the shortened training camps and time for personnel moves. This makes the game very interesting for us as fans.

We should be torn between not supporting the NFL at all and embracing the return of football. Clearly, the owners and players did not include us the fans in their deliberations although they steadfastly maintained that this was the case.

Still, football is back with all of the excitement it offers.

As a parallel, we can draw from this the need to stay ready even when time or all the resources we might like aren't available to us.

In my podcast message today "Football's Back" I look forward to the NFL season and take away off-season or off-time preparation as essential for success.

It Still Takes Us

We have a responsibility as well as the right to make our own decisions - within the context of moral guidelines and the law - and we do not need the government or regulatory agencies trying to assert themselves or making our choices for us - either directly or through the limitation of options.

We don't need mandates or rules on personal conduct. That's where we come in to make appropriate choices for ourselves, our families, our businesses, our customers, and anyone else that matters to us.

In my podcast message today "It Still Takes Us" I suggest that we stand up and exercise our rights to be responsible, to take personal intiative, and to make decisions - lest these rights be eroded or usurped.

Open The Gate

Opportunities are plentiful, but they don't often just appear. We have to be willing to go looking for them and be out in the world where we might find them.

We have to be willing to open the gate to our personal space and go looking for them. Some will pass by in front of us. Some will be more distant and require our actually looking for them. Nevertheless, opportunities don't often come to us. We have to search for them or be where they are going to appear.

In my podcast message today "Open The Gate" I suggest we be courageous enough to step out and begin looking for opportunities that might be near us.

Opportunities Abound

We have choices all throughout the day. We are faced with opportunities to do one thing or another, and to go in this direction or that. It's these unfolding and changing opportunities that make life interesting.

It's the choices and decisions we make along the way – from the moment we get up until we go to bed. Many decisions are not major or very consequential yet we dozens of them to make each day. Each decision represents an opportunity. Something good and unexpected can result. We just have to be prepared to recognize it and to respond to it.

In my podcast message today "Opportunities Abound" I note that live affords us so many opportunities - some good for us and some not. We have to be prepared to deal with each one as it comes along.

Watching & Waiting

As the summer moves along, many of us are excited about the gardens that we have and how well they are progressing. We'd like to begin harvesting now, but we have to wait until they are completely grown and ripe.

Patience is a large part of gardening - and building a business. While the ultimate harvest that we look forward to, it take planning, action, and patience to get to that point.

We cannot be impatient. We have to let some things take their time. Then we can enjoy what we have helped to produce.

In my podcast message today "Watching & Waiting" I encourage us to remain patient and diligent as we wait for the harvest.

Let's Give The President A Chance

Tomorrow the House is expected to consider, and presumably pass, HR 2560 - "Cut, Cap, & Balance Act of 2011." This is a sensible bill that has many parts.

To reiterate some of the key features:

Cuts total spending by $111 billion in FY 2012.  The savings is divided as follows:

  • Reduce non-security discretionary spending below 2008 levels, which saves $76 billion.

  • $35 billion cut to non-veterans, non-Medicare, non-Social Security mandatory spending.

  • Caps federal spending for the fiscal years:
    • 2012 – 23% of GDP
    • 2013 – 22% of GDP
    • 2014 – 21% of GDP
    • 2015 – 20.5% of GDP
    • 2016 – 20% of GDP
    • 2017 – 19.5% of GDP
    • 2018 – 19% of GDP
    • 2019 – 18.75% of GDP
    • 2020 – 18.5% of GDP
    • 2021 and beyond – 18% of GDP
Balances the budget by requiring the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment before raising the nation’s debt limit.

If the Balanced Budget Amendment doesn't pass by 2/3 of both the House and Senate, the debt ceiling would never be raised. That's great. Remember, if spending is cut, there is no need to raise the limit. In fact, it should be lowered as well.

After 2560 is passed it goes to the Senate. Nothing may happen there - especially since Harry Reid and the President see eye-to-eye on increased spending and taxes.

If it does pass both houses, it goes the president. He has promised to veto it. Let's give him that chance - the chance to decide if saving the country or advancing his agenda is more important.

    Midsummer Plans

Summer has been moving right along until we have gotten into some real heat, and that can talk its toll on our spirit and energy. We need to vacation and getaway at least for a few days this summer.

Still. there may be important goals and projects we need to complete before the fall.

We need to get our work done this summer but make sure that we take enough time off to enjoy and revitalize ourselves until we get into the cooler weather of the fall.

The heat can be a physical drain on our bodies and energy. We need to pace ourselves and take time to recoup.

In my podcast message today "Midsummer Plans" I encourage us to make it through the balance of the summer in good health.

    This Is America?

Colorado is taking the nanny-state concept to a new extreme. The Department of Human Services has proposed a set of guidelines for day care programs that are appalling. Make sure it does not become law. If enacted, no one should send their kids to daycare.

Here's a sample - there must be 3 races of dolls - and only 3, although not specified. No whole milk allowed for anyone 2 or older - only 1%, 2%, or skim. Only 20 minutes of TV or computer time per day unless it's a special occasion (can't imagine what that might be). Guidelines will be issued on eating times also.

So parents have to pay good money to private state-run day care programs and have their kids subjected to standards of living that may be in direct conflict to what they have at home?

What happened to freedom of choice? What happened to liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

Who decides that 21 minutes of TV is dangerous? Who decides that whole milk in injurious?

Rise up Coloradoans. Defeat this. Some parents can't work unless they use daycare.

This should be a wake up call to all of us, no matter where we live.

    An "Aha" Moment

The House has reversed a 5-year old ban on incandescent lightbulbs - scheduled to kick in at the end of this year. If the Senate concurs, jobs will come back and the problem CFLs will go away. It may well become law because it is attached to a necessary appropriations bill. This is how many measures are passed.

I call this an "aha" moment as in a lightbulb coming on above us (similar to a cartoon). This is also known as an epiphany - it's anytime that we suddenly become enlightened or aware of something that we hadn't realized before. It can be an idea that suddenly comes to us or something we see or understand that we really hadn't paid attention to previously.

In my podcast message today "An 'Aha' Moment" I am happy that some common sense may actually be evident in Congress. We'll have to see if this passes, but this is a great first step.

    Note To Harry Reid

Harry Reid told Eric Cantor to "get out of the way and let the grown-ups get to work." Eric Cantor isn't a Senator so he can't be bullied by Harry Reid. Eric is the majority leader in the House, next in line to the Speaker.

Harry Reid is throwing a tantrum - how grown-up is that?

Maybe he took a page from Obama who walked out of meetings at the White House when Eric refused to waiver on tax increases.

It's a good thing with have someone in the Congress with principles. Give 'em hell Eric. Don't back down to their childish antics.

    Door Number One

You might remember some TV game shows where people are presented with 2 or 3 curtains, doors, or boxes to choose from to try to improve the prize they already have or to win something special. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Not all opportunities are worthwhile for us. Not all help us move towards our goals. That's why we have to assess each time.

We get opportunities constantly - many are rather minor ones - but we need to evaluate them to determine which ones actually are beneficial to us and which ones might do us harm or take us on an alternate path.

    Some are big time wasters.

In my podcast message today "Door Number One" I present that we have to be diligent in reviewing opportunities that come our way and act only on those that are good for us.

    New Book Release

I used my podcast message today "New Book Release" to announce and briefly discuss my new book for Realtors and new home salespeople.

I wrote this with 2 audiences in mind - for Realtors to understand the new home sales process so they can take advantage of the several benefits that accrue to them with selling new homes, and for builders and new home salespeople to understand their role and responsibility in working with Realtors to sell their homes.

Builders want Realtors to work with them to help sell the homes they build, and there are many significant advantages for Realtors who do choose to work with builders on a transactional basis. My book explains the benefits in a quick, easy read.

    Mapping A Course

Most of us have used a map at some time to find out how to get to a city or address when we weren't sure of the exact route.

Now online resources have replaced maps, and we use them to locate an unfamiliar place we are traveling to and then to decide on a route. In business, we must also choose the route we want and then track it.

Once we select the route, we plan on the pace, the distance to travel in various segments, and where to stop along the way to eat or for sightseeing. Our business is quite similar.

In my podcast message today "Mapping A Course" I discuss our journeys and how we plan them to get where we are going.

    Thinking Ahead

As we commemorate the launch of the final space shuttle, Atlantis, tomorrow, we are thrilled at the accomplishments of the space program and saddened at the end of a 30-year era. Perhaps if the shuttle program had been shorter it would be easier to accept.

Now we need to think ahead to the next project or strategy.

How we close out one chapter in our lives or businesses and open another, preferably with a seamless transition, is very important. Without having a plan or vision for what comes next, we lose momentum. We have to stay engaged and looking forward to what comes next.

In my podcast message today "Thinking Ahead" I remind us to keep looking down the road so that we don't suddenly come to a prolonged rest stop.

    Remaining Vigilant

We are passing through the middle of the year, and we have an opportunity to evaluate what we have been doing as well as enjoy the great outdoor activities that are available now.

The 4th of July is a very important day. However, remembering our freedoms and liberties is a constant thing - not just a once a year activity. We need to protect and advance our freedoms every day.

Celebrating freedom means little if those freedoms begin to deteriorate and erode. Government wants to expand. It's our job to keep it small. It has gotten so big. We must remain vigilant and stand up and protest any new regulation or infringement that curtails free enterprise and the many liberties we enjoy.

In my podcast message today "Remaining Vigilant" I remind us of the importance of safeguarding our freedoms and liberties daily.

    Smack In The Middle

We are passing through the middle of the year, and we have an opportunity to evaluate what we have been doing as well as enjoy the great outdoor activities that are available now.

While we are right in the middle of the year and essentially in the middle of summer, we have about as far to go to the end of the year as we've come so far.

This gives us the ability to evaluate what we like about our performance to date and what we want to do to improve it.

This is the time to make adjustments. It's also the time to enjoy the season.

In my podcast message today "Smack In The Middle" I point out a few of the advantages for being where we are.

The Ultimate Test In Bike Racing

The Tour of France ("Tour de France") marathon bike race started today. This is a very arduous athletic contest that extends over 2,000 miles of physical activity for 3 weeks. Can't really have too many off days and still plan on doing well.

The implications for our business are many - training, planning, equipment, teamwork, stamina, timing, execution, and consistency.

While this appears to be an individual event, and we certainly recognize the big names in the sport, it is very much a team sport and one of intense strategy. Hence the lessons for business.

This year, there are 4 American teams fielded although most teams have an international flavor rather than being purely one nationality. A total of 198 riders started today, but we'll have to wait until the 24th to see who the winner is.

    Second Wind

We are coming to end of the first half of the 2011. The year is moving very quickly and we need to ready for what's coming.

Today we gin the second half of 2011 - like it or not. It's important that we get started with an optimistic look at what we can do in the coming months.

We are getting a second chance, a second wind, to finish 2011 well. It doesn't matter how we finished the first half of the year and whatever we accomplished or failed to get done. It no longer matters. We need to look ahead at finishing the year on a strong note.

We can make up for lost time, build upon earlier successes, keep the momentum going, or change directions. Keeping our eye on the end of the year is key.

In my podcast message today "Second Wind" I focus in getting off to a strong start on the second half of 2011.
